Last chances to see cathedral before demolition

The Cathedral Square walkway is open this weekend allowing the people of Christchurch to take a last look at ChristChurch Cathedral before it is demolished.

The building's owner, the Anglican Church, has decided that the city's most enduring symbol is beyond saving and has decided to take down all but the bottom two to three metres of the 130-year-old church.

Access to the square was granted last year so people could get an idea of the damage the cathedral sustained as a result of the 6.3-magnitude quake on 22 February and continuing aftershocks.

The walkway will be open again next weekend.
