Restart retailers may have to go

The manager of Christchurch's container mall does not yet know if all the retailers can stay there until Christmas.

Some shopowners are worried they might have to leave the mall after news that one property owner plans to rebuild on the land this year.

Restart the Heart Trust manager Paul Lonsdale says retailers in the northern precinct can stay until December.

But he says talks with the five landowners in the southern precinct are ongoing and it is too soon to give retailers an answer.

Mr Lonsdale says it was never the trust's intention to hold up the rebuilding, and he is arranging back up land nearby if the businesses do need to move.

Sam Lust, who works at Toi Toi gift shop in the mall's south precinct, says business has been good since the store opened late last year.

She says while the mall was always going to be a temporary structure, staff and business owners are worried about a potential move as their livelihood is at stake.
