A clinical psychologist in Christchurch says the earthquakes are bringing out the best in many Cantabrians.
Community and business leaders have been sharing the lessons they have learned from the quakes at a conference in the city on Thursday.
The psychologist, Fran Vertue, says an ability to think outside the box and take on new challenges is one of the side effects many people experience after a traumatic event like an earthquake.
Dr Vertue says she has dealt with a family who used the destruction of their home as an opportunity to build the eco-friendly house they had always wanted.
She also cites the case of a man who used the disruption to his business as a chance to get into a completely different career.
