Christchurch police are investigating after a squatter was found living in a condemned high rise building in the central city red zone.

MediaWorks contacted the police after noticing on Monday that someone had been staying in its Kilmore Street building.

Its general manager in Christchurch, Rob McDonald, says there was no one there when they arrived, but it looked like they may have left in a hurry.

Mr McDonald says his old office desk had been turned into a dining table and two couches had been pulled together to make a bed.

Canterbury Central Police area commander, Inspector Derek Erasmus, says it looked like one person had been living there for one or two days.
