Christchurch sees big drop in international student numbers

The number of international students studying in Christchurch dropped by almost 40% last year, largely due to the earthquakes and aftershocks.

Christchurch is normally New Zealand's second busiest centre for international education, behind Auckland.

Minister Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Steven Joyce says the results were not unexpected.

He says the earthquakes have had a severe impact on the number of people from overseas wishing to study in Christchurch.

Mr Joyce says the number of international students studying throughout the rest of New Zealand grew by 6%.
