The Government is defending its handling of the housing situation in Christchurch which opposition parties say has reached crisis point.

Minister of Housing Phil Heatley says the Government is providing more temporary housing, and there are permanent housing packages available to meet the shortage.

He told MPs he believes the Government is making sufficient progress.

Mr Heatley says the Government would not consider regulating home rental prices in Christchurch.
