Thousands back Avon river park proposal

A Christchurch group campaigning to create a river park out of earthquake damaged land says it has more than 20,000 signatures in support of the plan.

The Avon-Otakaro Network wants to turn land bordering the Avon River, much of which has been red-zoned, into a reserve.

The network launched the campaign earlier this year and more than 20,000 people have now signed the petition.

Network co-chairperson Mark Gibson says thousands more signatures have been collected but a final tally won't be known until next week.
