Top scholars not deterred by quakes

The Christchurch earthquake did not stop a group of young people from the region being included among New Zealand's top scholars.

New Zealand Scholarship Award winners were announced on Friday at Government House.

Ten students received Premier Awards, which recognise excellence over a range of subjects, with almost a third of the awards going to Cantabrians.

Thomas Frost from Christ's College says they studied more than usual to make up for lost time caused by the quakes and earn good grades.

All Premier prize recipients receive $10,000 each year for up to three years of tertiary study.
