Pets being put down due to rental shortage

The SPCA says more landlords in Christchurch should allow tenants with pets, as the housing shortage there is putting pressure on animal shelters.

The society says that because of a lack of suitable rental properties, more tenants are taking their pets to be euthanised.

Canterbury general manager Barry Helem says the society gets about 10 calls per day from people wanting to surrender their animals because they can no longer find a house with a landlord who will allow pets.

But the society has to turn these animals away because it's at full capacity.

Mr Helem says landlords should have more empathy with pet owners.
