Master plan urged for eastern suburbs

Labour is calling for a master plan for Christchurch's eastern suburbs and says Christchurch City Council is not doing enough to revitalise the area.

Earthquake recovery spokesperson Lianne Dalziel says the council has focused mostly on central Christchurch and other suburban CBDs, but needs to place greater importance on a vision for the city as a whole.

While there is a master plan for New Brighton, she says it should be expanded to include the rest of the eastern suburbs.

Mrs Dalziel says rivers, wetlands and the estuary should be set aside for outdoor sporting and recreation activities.

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says a plan like that would only be appropriate when red zone property owners have made decisions about their future.
