Two earthquakes have shaken the Christchurch area on Tuesday afternoon.

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake, just before 1.30pm, was centred 10km northeast of the city at a depth of 11km.

A second shake, at about 1.50pm measured magnitiude 3.5, and was centred in a similar place at a depth of 10km.
