CBD cordon moves, opens viewshaft

Another section of Christchurch's CBD Red Zone has been reopened to the public.

Part of the cordon has been moved west from Latimer Square, allowing access to part of Gloucester Street and a view of New Regent Street, though the street itself will remain cordoned off pending repairs.

Much of the historic streetscape, with its Spanish design features escaped the series of quakes which hit the city largely unscathed.

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority staff say the change will also allow The Press newspaper to move into its new building, marking its return to the CBD following the 22 February 2011 quake which destroyed its historic premises.
