Fletcher Building says its careers expo attracted so much interest it has begun planning another event for next year.
About 1000 Cantabrians flocked to the jobs fair at the Westpac Business and Community Hub in Addington over the weekend.
Fletcher Building says it was impressed by the number and the calibre of people who came looking for jobs.
The company is seeking at least 70 new employees across 11 of its businesses, and anticipates it will employ another 200 in the coming year.
Some applicants were unemployed but many were just looking for a change and said they wanted to contribute to the rebuilding of the city.
Fletcher concrete division chief executive Mark Malpass says the company is gearing up for unprecedented demand over the next five to ten years.
He says the company needs to fill a wide range of vacancies, from technical roles to administration.
The company's earthquake recovery business, Fletcher EQR, says its exhibit attracted phenomenal interest.
General manager David Peterson expects it will need to hire up to 150 more people over the next 12 months. "We've got a huge amount of work to get done in the next three or four years," he said.
Mr Peterson says the company has carried out almost 17,000 house repairs, and is doing 2000 a month.
"But we have to do up to 100,000, so it's a big ask. We need lots of really skilled people and we're just looking for people that can contribute to us."
