Durham Street in the central city red zone in Chistchurch is fully open again for the first time since the February 2011 earthquake.
Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority chief executive Roger Sutton says it opened just after 6pm on Thursday.
Gloucester Street will open again on at 5pm on Friday.
Mr Sutton says it will initially operate one way from east to west, but that could change as the rebuild progresses.
