A new temporary village has opened in the east of Christchurch for people with quake-damaged homes.
It's the third of its kind developed by the Department of Building and Housing to meet the growing demand for rental accommodation in Christchurch.
A Trade Me property analysis shows rental demand in the city is up by 47% since last year, causing average rent to rise by about 26%.
Canterbury Temporary Accommodation Service manager Justin Rowlands says 83 temporary houses are now in place in three villages.
He says the latest village consisting of 20 two-bedroom units took 10 weeks to put up on Rawhiti domain at New Brighton and the first residents will move in next week. The rent is $271 per week.
