Some elderly residents of a council complex in Christchurch have a week to move to other accommodation, because their homes have been deemed an earthquake risk.
The Christchurch City Council is closing 36 of 89 units in the Brougham Village complex.
The council's community services general manager, Michael Aitken, says engineers have assessed the seismic capacity of the affected units as being less than 34% of the New Building Standard.
The units, in two blocks and parts of five other blocks, have been rated at between 19% and 22% of the standard.
Mr Aitken says it will be a distressing time for the tenants, who are being offered alternative accommodation and help with moving.
