Australia updates travel advisory on Christchurch

An Australian government travel warning telling visitors to exercise a high degree of caution in Christchurch and Lyttelton has been updated.

The warning, issued on the smart traveller website run by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in the wake of the devastating Canterbury earthquakes, was revised on Tuesday.

The advice now is for visitors to take normal safety precautions.

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee welcomed the update, saying the New Zealand Government wants to encourage visitors back to Christchurch.

Mr Brownlee says many Australians would have visited the city despite the warnings and seen that Christchurch is still a great place to visit.
