Central city demolition material recycled

Updated at 9:32 am on 7 September 2012

Much of the waste material coming out of Christchurch's earthquake damaged central city has been recycled.

Christchurch City Council water and waste services manager Mark Christison says most materials are now sorted by demolition contractors on-site.

Mr Christison says companies awarded a demolition contract can also negotiate 'stripping' rights and recycle materials on-site in order to sell them.

He says demolition work in the CBD will continue for about another 12 months.
