The principal of Shirley Boys' High has given a personal guarantee that the Christchurch school will not close or merge - even though the options are still being considered by Government.
John Laurenson made the commitment at a community meeting on Tuesday night, where he called for calm in the wake of a proposal to close or merge 31 schools in the earthquake-hit region.
Mr Laurenson told the audience that Shirley Boys' High would remain as an entity as long as there is community support for a single sex school in the eastern suburbs.
He says he is confident that the Ministry of Education will listen if the community comes up with reasonable options for the school to remain.
The ministry's decision will largely be influenced by a geotechnical report being done on the school's quake-damaged land.
