Heritage advocates want Christchurch buildings saved

Heritage campaigners in Christchurch are calling for the Government to step in to save some quake damaged buildings facing demolition.

More than 100 people attended a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the issue at the historic NG Building in Madras Street which is at threat of being demolished.

Ross Gray from Historic Places Canterbury, who organised the meeting, says the Government's plan for the rebuild should protect the heritage buildings that remain.

The co-owner of the NG building, Roland Logan, says the Government needs to relax restrictions to make it easier for developers to rebuild.

City councillor Yani Johnason says it's time the Government put a plan in place for heritage buildings.
