Cowles Stadium in eastern Christchurch opened again on Friday, following repairs and earthquake strengthening.
The indoor stadium in Aranui was closed last year after an engineering report revealed it was earthquake prone.
Christchurch City Council has spent $480,000 strengthening the venue so that it now meets 100% of the modern building standard.
It is used for basketball, volleyball, netball and was a welfare centre for quake evacuees following the February earthquake last year.
Mayor Bob Parker said Cowles Stadium has been a key facility in eastern Christchurch for more than half a century.
