New citizen numbers well up

The number of people taking part in citizenship ceremonies in Christchurch is increasing after the earthquakes disrupted the number of people becoming new citizens in the city.

Mayor Bob Parker will on Wednesday eveningofficiate for 164 people at his 50th citizenship ceremony.

Mr Parker says it is heartening to see the numbers of people wanting to make Christchurch home.

Two ceremonies being held this week will bring the number of people receiving their citizenship certificates in Christchurch this year to 1705.

Last year, there were only 518 recipients. Mr Parker says the figures for this year are also well up on 2009 when 742 people got their citizenship.
