An advocacy service to help people in Canterbury settle insurance claims will be operational in Christchurch next month.

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority chief executive Roger Sutton says the Insurance Advocacy Service will be place by Christmas.

Mr Sutton says dealing with housing and insurance are top priorities for the city.

Earlier this year, Christchurch City Council voted unanimously to ask for a insurance tribunal and advocacy service to be set up.

Frustrated home owners in the city had demanded that insurance claims be speeded up.
