A total of 170 people will be recognised in Christchurch on Tuesday for acts of heroism and service during the February 2011 earthquake and its aftermath.

Christchurch City Council is presenting the second and final round of the Christchurch Earthquakes Awards on Tuesday.

The awards are to honour people who undertook acts of kindness, service or heroism on February 22, and in the days and weeks that followed.

Among those cited are people who managed evacuations, freed those trapped, performed emergency surgeries and even some who died whilst saving others.

Individuals named include Flat Man and Quake Kid, the super heroes of hidden identity who provided relief to students and others in need.

Air New Zealand will receive an award for providing free airfares to residents needing to get out of the city.
