Christchurch City Council is applying for resource consent to open up Cathedral Squarein the city's quake-damaged red zone.

Mayor Bob Parker said the council wants to turn part of the square into a temporary entertainment and gathering place.

With the proposed reduction of the red zone in 2013, Mr Parker said the council wants to make it easy for people to be able to reconnect with the spiritual, cultural and civic heart of the city.

He said the scale and shape of the interim space will vary depending on demolition and rebuilding activity on adjacent private sites and the phasing of the redevelopment of the square.
