Christchurch City Council has issued details about how the second anniversary of the earthquakes will be commemorated on 22 February.
A memorial service for the community will be held in Latimer Square at noon, co-hosted by the Anglican Cathedral. There will be one minute's silence at 12.51pm, the time the quake occurred.
Mayor Bob Parker said the effect of the quake is still being felt in the daily lives of all Cantabrians two years on.
He said the service will be a time where people can gather to remember the community's strength and kindness in the days following the quake and to take heart in the city's future.
Mr Parker said Christchurch and its people have come a long way in the past two years and while remedial work is still progressing, the city has a positive future as it re-invents itself as a world-class city.
Rebuilding the city is forecast to cost $30 billion.
