Public submissions on Hagley Park oval close

Christchurch City Council has received 239 submissions on whether an international cricket venue should be developed at Hagley Oval.

The deadline for submissions closed on Monday night on the proposal, which would upgrade an existing cricket pitch at Hagley Park.

Council resource consent manager John Higgins says that while the submissions are still being processed, views appear to be divided.

He says submissions in support of the upgrade say it will spur on the Christchurch recovery, while those opposing it say Hagley Park should remain a public space and not a commercial venture.

The consent application is due to be heard in the Environment Court later this year.
