Housing NZ, tenants still waiting for repair report

Housing New Zealand and about 600 of its tenants are still waiting on geotechnical reports before further repairs to earthquake-damaged home in Canterbury can begin.

The problems range from extensive structural damage to minor issues.

More than 3000 Housing New Zealand tenants are yet to have their homes repaired after the destructive February 2011 quake and some houses may have to be demolished.

Housing New Zealand's chief executive Glen Sowry says the organisation won't know until March which properties will be affected, and while the quicker it can get the report the better, care needs to be taken.

Structural engineers and geotec specialists are conducting trials on quake-affected land and are expected to deliver their report outlining which homes are repairable in a month's time.

Mr Sowry says 1300 homes are classified as being on TC3 land, meaning their foundations require complex rebuilding and the ground is damaged and unstable.
