Seismic test truck heading to NZ

10:26 am on 7 March 2013

The world's largest seismic vibration truck is on its way to New Zealand to carry out ground tests of the earth around Canterbury.

The University of Canterbury and the University of Texas are using the 29 tonne truck to carry out joint research on the groundscape.

It will be the first time that the truck, known as T-Rex, has been operated outside of the United States.

T-Rex will be used to determine the properties of soils from the ground surface to depths of 250 metres.

Testing will begin on 11 March at 15 sites around Christchurch.
