The Government has accepted almost all the recommendations made in the third and final report from the Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission.
The report focuses on building failure during the February 2011 earthquake.
The third report has made recommendations to improve how buildings are managed after a disaster, particularly concerning the rapid assessment process and the placarding system.
Building and Construction Minister Maurice Williamson said on Monday that 77 of the 83 recommendations from that report have been taken up.
Mr Williamson said across all three of the Royal Commission's reports, 170 out of 189 recommendations have been accepted, and the remaining 19 are still being discussed.
The minister said the Government is staggering its response to making changes, as many require law changes or significant research, and it would be at least two years before all the accepted recommendations are finalised.
The Institution of Professional Engineers on Monday welcomed the Government's acceptance of almost all of the recommendations.
Chief executive Andrew Cleland said he is not surprised by the Government's response because the Royal Commission's work was thorough and constructive.
