Christchurch was jolted by a magnitute 4.2 earthquake on Friday afternoon.
The quake struck just before 4pm at a depth of 6km. ts epicentre was 23km west of the city near Burnham.
There have been no reports of damage or injuries.
Emergency service St John is encouraging people to check to check their friends, family and neighbours are safe, especially if they live alone.
