Canterbury Regional Council says it underestimated the amount of hazardous material it would get through a programme to collect waste from Christchurch's red zone residential properties.
The Council started the scheme early in 2012 to safely dispose of products such as paint and gardens sprays.
The Council's commissioner, Rex Williams, says he expected to collect 100 tonnes of waste over three years but has picked up 203 tonnes in just 11 months.
He says more than half the 7860 red-zoned properties have been cleared.
The programme will receive an additional $500,000, taking its funding to more than $1 million.
