Deal lays framework for 'stunning' Christchurch

Christchurch City Councillors have voted on how the cost of the city's rebuild following damaging earthquakes will be split between the council and the Government, but are keeping the result secret ahead of a joint announcement late next week.

The cost sharing agreement has been negotiated over a number of months and sets out who will pay for, own and control anchor projects that feature in the Government's blueprint for the central city. These include a convention centre, a covered stadium and an indoor sports facility.

The Government is contributing $15 billion towards the $40 billion rebuild.

After a meeting on Thursday afternoon, mayor Bob Parker said the details would have to wait until next week, but he was excited about what was coming.

Mr Parker said the agreement has laid the framework for a stunning city.

Mayoral candidate and Christchurch East MP Lianne Dalziel earlier said the city is facing its most significant financial situation.

Ms Dalziel told Radio New Zealand's Morning Report programme that, while she understands why the meeting is private, she questions whether councillors will be given proper advice by government officials about the implications of the agreement.
