Part of the Akaroa museum opened again on Saturday morning. more than a year after it closed for earthquake repairs.

The exhibition gallery and shop opened but the remainder of its galleries, which were more significantly damaged, remain closed to the public.

Director, Lynda Wallace said it was a small but significant step for the museum and the community.

Christchurch City Council closed the museum in June last year after a structural evaluation showed its three galleries and foyer were well below the new building standards.

Akaroa museum is one of the town's top visitor attractions.
