Surveyors not needed for floor tilt checks - EQC

The Earthquake Commission says surveyors are not required to assess whether floor tilt is due to earthquake damage.

The Institute of Surveyors is calling on the Commission to use registered professional surveyors when assessing some earthquake damaged homes in Christchurch and for it to review its floor level assessment methods.

But the Earthquake Commission's Canterbury home repair manager said it has met with the institute and a different set of skills is needed to establish if unevenness in floor levels is due to earthquake damage.

Reid Stiven said the EQC has always drawn on chartered professional engineers and other qualified practitioners where appropriate, and it has absolute confidence in the methods used, although it is open to advice from experts such as surveyors.
