The Earthquake Commission expects to receive at least 100,000 claims as a result of Saturday's earthquake.

Three assessors will arrive in Christchurch on Sunday.

Chief executive Ian Simpson says anyone wanting to lodge a claim has three months to do so, by calling 0800 DAMAGE.

He says 1500 claims have already been lodged and 20% of these are by people saying their home is not habitable.

Most of the claims, 1300, are from Christchurch city and the commission expects it could easily receive 100,000 claims or more.

Mr Simpson advises people to start filing their claims to the commission before they go through their private insurers.

He says people should keep as much detail and physical evidence of their damaged belongings as they can.
