Volunteers asked to wait - Civil Defence

Civil Defence says people thinking of going to the Canterbury region to help after Saturday's earthquake should hold off for now.

People are asked to put off all non-essential travel to Christchurch and the surrounding districts.

Civil Defence says there are already plenty of skilled volunteers from the fire service, army and farming organisations, and extra people will hinder, not help, the relief effort.

Civil Defence says people who want to volunteer should email or phone to have their offer recorded, but it is unlikely they will be contacted.
