Access to water is now one of the biggest worries for farmers in the wake of Saturday's earthquake in Canterbury.
Already there are reports of some farm wells drying up and others that are literally spouting water.
Federated Farmers says it hopes the change in water supply is just a temporary effect due to underground pressure.
Mid-Canterbury Grain chair David Clark says some of the affected wells, particularly in the Darfield area, are more than 100 metres deep and could have suffered structural damage.
However, Canterbury Regional Council is reassuring well owners worried about the long-term impact on their water supplies.
Acting investigations and monitoring director Tim Davie says that beyond the immediate disruption, it does not expect any major changes to the ground water system.
