All jury trials postponed for the week

The likely unavailability of jurors has forced the postponement of all jury trials in Christchurch this week.

The Justice Ministry's southern region manager, Murray Smith, says his staff have managed to process new arrests, complete some sentencing, continue bail applications and get protection orders issued.

But it's unreasonable, he says, for jurors to be expected to attend court this week, because of post-earthquake stress and disruption.

Mr Smith says all Disputes Tribunal cases set down for Wednesday have been postponed for tomorrow and the situation will be reviewed on Thursday.

Meanwhile, court proceedings at the Rangiora District Court on Wednesday have been postponed because of fresh fears about the building's safety.
