Quake-affected railway lines have reopened in Canterbury.

The Main South Line and the Midland Line, both of which were closed because of strong aftershocks overnight, reopened early on Tuesday afternoon.

The Main North Line between Christchurch and Rangiora, which has been closed since Saturday because of a damaged bridge and tracks near Kaiapoi, should reopen later in the afternoon.

KiwiRail says freight has been transferred to trucks between Rangiora and Christchurch.
