Residents in some of the most affected areas of Christchurch says their lives are on hold until the insurance assessors visit.

Teams of Earthquake Commission assessors are passing door to door in the eastern suburb of Bexley, to view residential house damage and advise home owners.

The assessors say they hope to start in the suburb of Avonside on Sunday.

Avonside resident Charmain Simpson whose house is badly damaged and full of silt, says she visits every day from light until dark to clean up her property, and goes to friends' at night.

She says she can't make any plans for other accommodation until the assessors visit and tell her if the house can be saved.
