Government may give money for historic building repair

Prime Minister John Key says he is not ruling out special government funding to save some historic buildings damaged in the Canterbury quake.

A number of historic buildings have been damaged and are now under threat.

Mr Key says it will not be possible for all such buildings to be saved without help from the Government.

He says there is an issue over which ones are saved, and he would expect requests from local mayors and the Historic Places Trust.

Mr Key says the Cabinet has not yet discussed the issue.
