The Canterbury Earthquake Appeal fund had collected more than $2.1 million by Sunday, and at least another $1 million had been pledged.

The New Zealand Red Cross says donations from businesses and members of the public have been coming in from all over the country.

Messages of support have come from five Christchurch sister cities and from the French and Korean ambassadors.

Canterbury Civil Defence headquarters says it has had an overwhelming response from people wanting to volunteer.

Donations to the Canterbury Earthquake Appeal can be made at any branch of Kiwibank, ANZ, National, ASB, BNZ and TSB banks, at Paper Plus and Vehicle Testing New Zealand branches or via the New Zealand Red Cross website.
