Emergency grants for quake victims

People displaced by the Canterbury earthquake will be able to apply for emergency grants from Tuesday.

The Red Cross Canterbury Earthquake Commission will give cash payments to people who have had to leave their homes as a result of the 7.1-magnitude quake on 4 September.

Emergency management officer Graeme Brown says the criteria for those who qualify is simple - anyone who has a red sticker on their homes should be eligible.

Each person can be granted $1,000 with a cap of $3,000 for three or more adults from one house to share.

Those in need can use the funding for whatever they choose.

Mr Brown says registrations will be taken from tomorrow and the money will be distributed as quickly as those applications can be processed.
