New Zealanders in Britain are banding together to raise money for victims of the Canterbury earthquake.

New Zealand Society UK president Michelle Marsh says the organisation has been inundated with requests from ex pats and New Zealand organisations in London seeking a way to make donations.

The society has launched a Canterbury Earthquake Fund, with an initial donation from its own funds of £5000.

As well as accepting donations, Ms Marsh says the organisation will donate proceeds from raffles at the next two New Zealand Society events to the fund.

The Australian Red Cross is urging Australians to give money to an appeal for earthquake victims.

It says some of the money will go towards providing tarpaulins, blankets and water bottles.
