Rate rise possible to cover quake costs - council

Waimakiriri District Council is not ruling out a rates rise in order to meet a shortfall in the cost of earthquake repairs.

Chief executive Jim Palmer was asked at a public meeting in Kaiapoi on Thursday night if a rise was a possibility.

Mr Palmer said the price-tag for repairs could be up to $120 million and he estimated the council and ratepayers could be liable for $10 - $20 million of that.
