Police say officers will continue to patrol the parts of Christchurch affected by the earthquake, even though the state of emergency has been lifted.

The Canterbury district commander, Superintendent Dave Cliff, says Operation Reassurance involves 10 four-person groups of police and army officers patrolling the areas 24 hours a day.

Supt Cliff says the continued high police and military presence is aimed at ensuring that streets left uninhabited by the quake aren't targeted by criminals.
