Aftershocks continue in Canterbury following the magnitude 7.1 earthquake on 4 September.

After a four-day respite from strong quakes, GNS Science recorded three aftershocks overnight. The largest was magnititude 4.6, centred 20km west of Christchurch at 3.40am on Friday. It was at a depth of 9km.

GNS says Canterbury residents should not expect the aftershocks to stop just yet.
