Habitat for Humanity is pledging to recruit hundreds of tradespeople to help repair houses damaged by the Canterbury earthquake, for those without insurance.

The Earthquake Commission says it has assessed over 2000 properties and started paying claims.

By Wednesday, 2812 had been reported uninhabitable and 3156 were not weatherproof.

Habitat for Humanity understands about 70,000 insurance claims have been filed already.

But chief executive Pete North says up to 5% of homeowners may be without insurance.

Mr North says the charity is wants hundreds of tradespeople to volunteer to go to Christchurch for two weeks to help with repairs for those home owners.

He says he hopes the Government can help pay for the building materials.
