The Labour Party has questioned some of the changes introduced by the Government to deal with heritage buildings and archaeological sites in the aftermath of the Canterbury earthquake.
Under the Canterbury Earthquake Response and Recovery Bill, the Government can suspend legal requirements in order to speed up recovery work.
It has made changes to fast track consents for reconstruction of damaged heritage buildings and its latest order-in-council relates to archaeological sites that might be found in clean-up work.
The Labour Party, which voted for the emergency law, says the changes dealing with heritage buildings and archaeological sites are unnecessary.
Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says the changes do not remove the obligations on people about what they can do with such sites, but speed up the process for having work approved.
